The old saying of "keep it simple stupid" applies to web animations more than most. It is so tempting given all this fancy rope available to hang your website completely. Your animations should usually be less not more in number, not too trivial and not too large. Large animations will grind your website down into the slow lane and visitors will not wait.

Small animations can be quite effective and if done well add a vitality to the site and breathe life into it. You also need to be sure that an animation is going to say what you want it to. Many designers will go off at tangents and your end result might be something Mr Spielberg would be proud of but your message is lost.
